Welcome to Troop 132

Let me introduce myself.  My name is Dave Gruber and I am the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 132 here in
Upton.  As a young boy I joined Boy Scouts and to this day have wonderful memories of my time in scouting.
Hopefully your son will choose to create similar memories by joining Boy Scouts.

Boy Scouts is a wonderful way to work towards both individual and team goals.  It is a chance to learn vital and
useful outdoor skills such as knot tying, survival skills, camping skills and water skills to mention a few.  It also
gives boys the opportunity to learn life skills such as teamwork, community service and working towards goals that
each boy sets for himself.  It also provides the unique opportunity to learn valuable leadership skills.

While in Boy Scouts your son will advance at his own pace while participating in a patrol with other boys of similar
age.  During your son’s first year in Boy Scouts he will work with other scouts to develop the foundation skills
needed for him to participate independently in the many outdoor adventures that Boy Scouts experience.  After
achieving the rank of First Class he will be able to choose from 120+ Merit Badges, selecting the topics that meet
his individual interests and strengths.

Each month we focus on a scouting theme, learning individual and team skills during our weekly meetings. At the
end of the month we put our skills to work in an outdoor adventure, including camping out.  For example, recently
we learned about orienteering.  This included navigation, and plotting using a compass and other techniques
such as celestial navigation.  At the end of the month we applied all the skills we learned about orienteering on
our campout.

To join Troop 132, simply come to one of our weekly meetings or feel free to contact me or our troop committee
chairperson at your convenience.

Boy Scouts is a wonderful place for your son to belong, be himself and to set and achieve his own goals.  I very
much look forward to meeting and working with your son and to be able to answer any questions you may have.
